Friedrich Hayek was a very influence person as a philosopher and economist. Previous president Ronald Reagan listed him as one of the most influential person who affected him, he even invited Hayek to White House.
Hayek’s writing was especially influential, it was translated, wisely read, it was sold even in the black markets. The book affected those velvet revolters, from Prague and other Czechoslovakian cities, who led the movement to end communism. This eventually led to the fall of Soviet Union. “There is no figure who had more of an influence, no person had more of an influence on the intellectuals behind the Iron Curtain than Friedrich Hayek. His books were translated and published by the underground and black market editions, read widely, and undoubtedly influenced the climate of opinion that ultimately brought about the collapse of the Soviet Union.
”--Milton Friedman* (Hoover Institution)
His idea of classical liberalism was so influential that it even created new political party called the “liberals”.
He visited Chile, had interviews. He influenced people there, since they were under dictator Augusto Pinochet. After his visit, Chile finally made most state free, and replaced the ruler by popular vote.
He was recognized by a lot of people, president Reagan (as mentioned above), George Bush (he received Presidential Medal of Freedom which is one of the two highest civilian award in America), he met pope John Paul II to discuss their fields (even if religion and science don’t really relate to each other and Hayek was not a Catholic), he was appointed as Order of the Companion of the Honour by Queen Elizabeth, etc.
